Why Nepal?
Nepal is one of the poorest country in the world. According to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), 20.3% of the population lived below the national poverty line in 2022. The proportion of employed population below $2.15 purchasing power parity/day in 2024 was 0.2%. For every 1,000 babies born in Nepal in 2023, 27 died before their 5th birthday.
Furthermore, Nepal faces persistent gender inequality, particularly impacting women and girls, despite constitutional commitments to equality. Social norms often favour men, restricting women's opportunities in education, employment, and decision-making. While legal frameworks are in place, implementation and enforcement, especially regarding violence against women, remain challenges. To that end, women in Nepal have long experienced poverty, social exclusion, and marginalisation because of their gender, especially among ethnic minorities and low-caste groups.
